MO Voter Registration Attacks Are a Partisan Set-Up

For the past two weeks there have been escalating charges in Missouri against the grassroots group ACORN for voter registration fraud. Additionally attacks from the right-wing have accused ACORN of illegally campaigning for Claire McCaskill.
The wingnut blogosphere has been going bonkers in their attempt to smear ACORN and McCaskill with voter fraud since the AP broke the "story" in early October. Why? Because ACORN is spearheading both the largest voter registration drive in the state (targeting primarily working families, people of color, and single working women) and the massice GOTV effort directed as boosting turnout in favor of the minimum wage ballot initiative in that state.
But on Saturday Oct. 28 the St. Louis Post Dispatch is breaking a story that exposes the partisan nature of these attacks and the fact that the whole thing was an orchestarted set-up from day one. Read more on the flip.
The Background:
ACORN just completed largest voter registration drive in Missouri, collecting over 77,000 cards across the state. About 3 weeks ago, stories started hitting the wire services and the right-wing blogosphere about accusing the voter registration program of submitting fraudulent cards numbering in the thousands. While there may be some cases of vr circulators padding their numbers with false cards, most of the cards under investigation are legitimate.
But the right-wing is using these accusations as a means of discrediting progressive efforts to boost turnout in the upcoming election. ACORN is targeting over 400,000 voters for mobilization on Election Day, most of whom are low-propensity and drop-off voters. In other words, people who wouldn't vote without this targeted program.
Obviously this threatens right-wing efforts in Missouri. So the GOP Regsitrar of Elections in St. Louis, a political appointee of Gov. Blunt, has implemented a program designed to disrupt ACORN's work.
On Saturday, the St. Louis Post Dispatch is publishing a story that shows that not only is the Registrar's office attempting to disenfranchise 5000 of ACORN's registrants's by throwing up additional barriers before adding the to the rolls, but they have put the chief ACORN accuser, a fired employee, on the payroll of the registrar's office.
Clearly this is a set-up, a GOP dirty trick implemented because they know they can't win in Missouri legitimately.
When the story comes out I'll provide a link in this posting.
In the meantime here is a link to ACORN (http://www.acorn.org) and to another story of the use of political power to disrupt ACORN's electoral participation work in this election. (http://www.chieforganizer.org/index.php
